It’s official, the new president of Brazil is Jair Bolsonaro.

The one who hates minorities.

The one who said he would rather have a dead son than a gay son.

The one who said his sons don’t date black girls because they are “educated’.

The one who said indigenous people wouldn’t have an inch of land.

The one who told a woman that she didn’t deserve to be raped because she was “ugly”.

The one who said the only mistake in the brazilian military dictatorship was that they tortured, but they should’ve killed.

The one who idolizes Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, the worst torturer of the dictatorship in Brazil.

And much more.

That’s our new president and I’ve never felt so disappointed on my people in all my life. We will need strenght the next 4 years, especially the minorities, because this man hates us.

He’s not my president and I am a part of the opposition. I will resist.

big fucking surprise but trump is blaming the temple for not having been armed lmao

“if they had some kind of a protection inside the temple, maybe it could have been a very much different situation” —trump in response to a reporter’s question about gun control

what is it gonna take for you freaks to realize that antisemitism is still real and is deadly, right now, in 2018

you all need to fucking reblog this no offense. especially if you aren’t jewish

source, and another source in which the synagogue says they do in fact have guards, but only on major holidays.

how far do people have to go just to survive, and how long is this going to go on until the blame is finally focused on antisemitism itself?

feathersescapism:

Every time I see this quote I realize how poor even very smart people are at looking at the long game and at assessing these things in context.

One of my favourite illustrations of this was in a First Aid class. The instructor was a working paramedic. He asked, “Who here knows the stats on CPR? What percentage of people are saved by CPR outside a hospital?”

I happen to know but I’m trying not to be a TOTAL know it all in this class so I wait. And people guess 50% and he says, “Lower,” and 20% and so forth and eventually I sort of half put up my hand and I guess I had The Face because he eventually looked at me and said, “You know, don’t you.”

“My mom’s a doc,” I said. He gave me a “so say it” gesture and I said, “Four to ten percent depending on your sources.”

Everyone else looked surprised and horrified.

And the paramedic said, “We’re gonna talk a bit about some details of those figures* but first I want to talk about just this: when do you do CPR?”

The class dutifully replies: when someone is unconscious, not breathing, and has no pulse.

“What do we call someone who is unconscious, not breathing, and has no pulse?”

The class tries to figure out what the trick question is so I jump over the long pause and say, “A corpse.”

“Right,” says the paramedic. “Someone who isn’t breathing and has no heartbeat is dead. So what I’m telling you is that with this technique you have a 4-10% chance of raising the dead.”

So no, artists did not stop the Vietnam War from happening with the sheer Power of Art. The forces driving that military intervention were huge, had generations of momentum and are actually pretty damn complicated.

But if you think the mass rejection of the war was as meaningless as a soufflé – well.

Try sitting here for ten seconds and imagining where we’d be if the entire intellectual and artistic drive of the culture had been FOR the war. If everyone thought it was a GREAT IDEA.

What the whole world would look like.

Four-to-ten percent means that ninety to ninety-six percent of the time – more than nine times out of ten – CPR will do nothing, but that one time you’ll be in the company of someone worshipped as an incarnate god.

If you think the artists and performers attacking and showing up people like Donald Trump is meaningless try imagining a version of the world wherein they weren’t there.

(*if you’re curious: those stats count EVERY reported case of CPR, while the effectiveness of it is extremely time-related. With those who have had continuous CPR from the SECOND they went down, the number is actually above 80%. It drops hugely every 30 seconds from then on. When you count ALL cases you count cases where the person has already been down several minutes but a bystander still starts CPR, which affects the stats)

In class today, Trump was somehow brought up and someone said that Trump was a neo-nazi and my professor was like, “Trump hasn’t ever said he was a neo-nazi” and another kid said, “I was still gay before I started calling myself gay!” and realized what he said and he looked just mortified but it was the greatest response to anything I’ve ever heard

When trump makes you so angry that you ram down the closet door to call out some bs

Gays coming out of their closet to shame the mankind

i am shaking a lot right now and my heart is in my mouth and i’ve been crying on and off and on and off for the past two weeks, and i know that none of you give a fuck about brazil, and that none of you care about politics outside of the ones that directly affect you, but i am terrified. as a bissexual, socialist, umbandista, brazilian woman, i am terrified. and i am begging you to care.

trigger warning for : swastikas, nazism, racism, homophobia, sexism, transphobia, torture, rape.

here’s what is happening in brazil:

in this year, we hold presidential elections. these elections are the most important in the history of brazil, for a very simple reason: now, that we are on the second round, we either elect a far-right candidate with authoritarian tendencies who flirts with fascism, or we elect a center-left candidate who belongs to the party that was in power for from 2002-2016, before a coup occurred mid 2016.

one of the candidates is fernando haddad, the man seen on this gif:

he was the mayor of são paulo, has been called by the new york times a ‘visionary’, was considered the greatest mayor of latin america, as his time as minister of education made over 100 federal, free institutes, ensured that the history of africa was taught in schools. he has a bacharel degree in law, a masters in economy and a phd in philosophy. he is currently a professor at an university. he gave free buses to children in public education, who could not afford it otherwise, lowered the corruption in the state of são paulo, created a better system for women to denounce harrassment and assault, and overall did a lot of good. i’m not going to spend 3 hours finding different sources for this, because you all don’t actually care.

the other candidate, is jair bolsonaro, and he is not the “tropical trump”, he is not our version of berlusconi. he is worse.

here’s what he looks like:

he has praised general carlos alberto brilhante ustra, who is known as the mastermind behind the tortures that occurred during the dictatorship. when he praised him, he did so when voting to impeach our former president dilma rouseff, who was tortured during the dictatorship, and fought for freedom. he has said that “if the crisis gets worse, we’ll shut down the congress” and install a dictatorship. he has said that the dictatorship should have killed more people, and tortured less. that it should have killed 30.000 people. that it should have killed our then president fernando henrique cardoso. he has said that his son would never marry a black woman because he gave him education. he has said that gay people are only gay because they were not beaten as children. he has said that indigenous people are lazy and greedy, that immigrants are the scum of the earth. he has said that women should earn less because they get pregnant. he has said that he would not rape a congresswoman, maria do rosário, because she is not worthy of it. he has said that his daughter is a woman because he got weak and could not produce another man. are you horrified yet? do you understand the problem yet? do you care yet?

in the beginning of the year, marielle franco, a poor, black, bissexual politician was executed. a street was named after her. here’s what people in his party did:

he is leading the polls currently, around 54-58% against 42-46%. ever since the first round of elections, last sunday (07/10), over 50 cases of assaults to people against bolsonaro have been reported.

here are some of them:

  • a black man was stabbed to death 12 times for saying he voted for haddad.
  • a woman had a swastika carved onto her belly for walking around with a shirt that said “ele não”, not him, the name of a campaign against bolsonaro.
  • a swastika was painted in front of a university, alongside the saying “get out blacks”
  • in different stadiums, football crowds sing “hey, fruit, beware, bolsonaro is going to kill f*gs”
  • a trans woman was beaten up for … well, existing.

here’s a picture. here’s the news report.

to make things more worrying, the united states, who has knowingly backed up a military coup in 1964, has donated 96 BULLETPROOF MOBILS TO THE BRAZILIAN ARMY

I think the main difference between millennials and gen z is that we both went through the same awful things, all the same bullshit, but where as it left us depressed and disillusioned, it left them depressed, disillusioned and PISSED OFF.

Millenials: College is more expensive than it’s ever been but I still have to go and put myself in debt for the tiniest chance that it might make someone consider hiring me, I will never be able to afford a house, there’s a goddamn shootout every other day, the world is a nightmare and I wanna die.

Gen Z(Pointing directly at the old rich white fucks who made all this happen): College is incredibly fucking expensive but we still have to put ourselves in debt and do it, I’ll never be able to afford a house, there’s a GODDAMN SHOOTOUT EVERY OTHER DAY, the world is a nightmare and I wanna die and YOU MOTHERFUCKERS ARE GOING DOWN WITH ME.

Millenials: A lot of articles about how the environment’s a mess like to start with how we’re ‘destroying the world’ and framing it as personal responsibility. Like, ‘You! The environment’s in shambles and it’s YOUR FAULT! Yes you! You reading this! You did this! You did this by not biking enough!’ which is horseshit because we do not all have an equal environmental impact. We all have SOME impact, and you can take steps to try and minimize your own, but pretending that one single person’s impact is the same as a company’s or a billionaire who spent decades making his money off oil and fought the introduction of clean energy every step of the way is bullshit. Yes, the world is in shambles, but that’s not solely on us and we alone can’t stop it if they don’t change too. And they won’t.

Gen Z(Putting on their Ass Kicking Boots): Fortunately for us, those billionaires and company execs have names and addresses. 🙂

Members of Congress are living off food stamps for a week to protest Republican cuts. It’s a challenge for them, but GOP cuts would hurt millions of everyday Americans.

Why does this not have more publicity. This needs it!

I want a reality tv show where politicians have to live in poverty for a month. They have to live in Government housing, shop with food stamps, and get only a limited amount of money for clothes. Because here, they still have all their trappings, lilke nice cars and thousand dollar suits. I want them in Walmart jeans trying to determine if they can afford a carton of milk.

Give them a full calendar year. I want to see them confident in January, and sometime around June choking back tears at the Safeway because they are tired, so tired, of eating 25 cent cup noodles, eyeing other peoples’ full grocery carts with a dull bewilderment.

Let me see them despair because they have a persistent nagging cough that won’t go away and might be turning into pneumonia but the minute clinic is $60, which might as well be as six million dollars, either way they ain’t got it to spare – and that doesn’t count the cost of prescriptions. Let me hear them tell people about the muscle cramps they get at night due to eating non-nutritious garbage for months, the weakness from persistent hunger.

Let them know the shame and frustration of only owning one pair of cheap polyester pants for work and one pair of thrift-store jeans, and both persistently have ripped crotches and seams coming undone, no matter how many times they get sewn back up.

Let the women know the particular sort of despair that comes once a month when you can’t afford even the cheapest pads or tampons.

Let them understand the frustration of being charged a $35 fee for a $2 overdraft. Let them watch as the bank holds charges from different days in “pending” till they all come through on the same day, and the bank charges them four times for a single overdraft because “the charges all cleared at the same time”.

I want them to know the particular pain of having to decide between food for the week, or transportation costs to and from work. You can’t have both. Choose wisely.

You do not truly understand poverty until you’ve lived it and a month isn’t enough to encompass it. Not even close.

Exactly fucking this. =.=
